The Pre-Award/Post-Award Handoff: What Works, What Doesn’t, and Why

Successful research administration relies on strong, intentional collaboration between pre-award and post-award teams…from proposal development through award management and closeout. When handoffs are unclear or assumptions go unspoken, institutions can experience compliance risk, operational inefficiencies, and strain on both administrators and principal investigators.

In this interactive, case-based NCURA TV experience, research administrators will examine real-world scenarios that highlight common challenges at the pre-award/post-award interface. Participants will explore where handoffs can break down, what information is often missed or misunderstood, and how proactive communication can strengthen continuity across the award lifecycle.

Through facilitated discussion, participants will work through scenarios such as:

  • A proposal budget that is compliant at submission but difficult to administer post-award
  • Cost sharing or effort commitments that were not fully discussed prior to award acceptance
  • Subaward terms or compliance requirements that create downstream administrative challenges
  • Changes at award that require quick coordination between pre-award, post-award, and compliance teams

This NCURA TV experience will focus on the connections, conversations, and shared accountability needed to support investigators while maintaining compliance and institutional stewardship. Participants will also share strategies and practices that have improved collaboration at their own institutions.

This NCURA TV experience is designed for pre-award, post-award, compliance, and research operations professionals, as well as managers seeking to strengthen cross-functional teamwork.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this NCURA TV experience, participants will be able to:

  • Identify critical handoff points between pre-award and post-award using case-based examples
  • Recognize common issues and risks that emerge when information is incomplete or assumptions differ
  • Analyze real-world scenarios to determine where earlier communication could improve outcomes
  • Describe the key conversations and documentation needed to support smooth transitions
  • Apply practical strategies for strengthening collaboration and shared understanding across the award lifecycle
